Debian GNU/Linux on Dell Inspiron 1520
Introduction
I ordered a Dell Inspiron 1520 from Dell India on December 13th 2007. I was told that the machine will arrive on Jan 2nd 2008, but it arrived on Dec 28th 2008 itself. Dell sent a technician to open and verify that the hardware is working. There was no option to order this particular laptop with no OS installed, so I reluctantly selected the Windows XP option, which was the cheapest and default. Dell India has no WIndows Refund program, so I had to do away with that reluctantly, thus becoming a Microsoft customer for the second time (first time I became their customer was when I bought their Natural Keyboard, which is the one and only wonderful product manufacturered by Microsoft till date, in my opinion).
Specifications
The good thing about Dell is that one can select the components which goes into the system, pretty much the way one would build a desktop system from components. Of course it is not so flexible, but there are some wide variety of component selections available with varied price points and features. I choose some high end components and some not so high end ones. I have always found it best to chose those components which fall on the knee-point in the prive vs performance curve. There is no point paying a fortune for a 2.2 GHz processor knowing very well that, that extra 200 MHz is not going to make a drastic performance difference.
I also avoided those manufacturers who are Free Software unfriendly, like nVidia. I will not buy an nVidia product unless they make their specifications public or publish source code. The next big company I wanted to boycott was Broadcom, as they have made no effort to publish the specs for their Wireless devices. That way, Intel is also not a good choice, but better among the lot. Particularly, the Wireless chip IPW3945abg uses a binary-only microcode, though the driver code itself is Free. But non-free firmware is non-free software too.
So here are components that make up my Inspiron 1520.
- Intel Core 2 Duo T7300, 2 GHz CPU
- Intel X3100 Graphics
- Intel Pro Wireless 3945abg
- Intel HD Audio Controller with Sigmatel STAC9205 Codec
- 160 GB S-ATA Harddisk
- 2 GB DDR2 SDRAM
- UVC Webcam
- SD Card Reader
- V.90 Modem
- Standard Ports (USB, Firewire, IR etc)
- 15.4″ WXGA 1440×900 LCD display (glossy)
- Broadcom BCM4401 100BaseT Ethernet
- Did I miss anything …. ?
Preparing to Install Debian GNU/Linux
The laptop by default came with Windows XP Home edition. I needed to make room for installing the Debian GNU/Linux. Having not done any partition and resizing for quite some time, I did a bit of search on the web and found that one need to defragment the NTFS partition. I decided to restrict Windows to 15GB and allocate the rest to GNU/Linux.
Now, the Dell Inspiron laptops come with a wierd disk layout. Here is the initial rough layout when I opened the box.
- 80 MB – Dell Utility partition (primary)
- 155 MB – Windows XP (primary)
- 80 MB (?) – system restore (logical)
- 2.5 GB – Dell MediaDirect partition (logical)
I deleted the system restore and MediaDirect partitions. After booting into Windows, I download this nifty GPLed program called jkdefrag from the web and defragmented the WinXP partition. Then I downloaded the excellent SystemRescue CD Image and used it to resize the NTFS partition to 15 GB.
I then created the new layout which looks like this.
/dev/sda1 1 10 80293+ de Dell Utility /dev/sda2 * 11 1922 15358140 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/sda3 1923 9217 58597087+ 83 Linux /dev/sda4 9218 19457 82252800 5 Extended /dev/sda5 9218 19332 81248706 83 Linux /dev/sda6 19333 19457 1004031 82 Linux swap
Installing Debian
I used the Debian testing (lenny) netinst ISO image to create the netinst CD so that I can install everything off the web. I choose to select the tasks “Desktop” and “laptop” inaddition to the “standard” system. After downloading some 700 odd MB of data, the netinst garbled the screen while attempting to configure X. I had no option but start all over again. This time I choose the “standard” system alone, no “Desktop” or “laptop” mode. This installed a small but usable base system. I then got installed the rest of the system one by one using apt-get.
Installing GNOME Desktop and X was fine. No surprises. X config program detected the Intel X3100 graphics chip automatically.
Harddisk Care
Wireless Networking
Debian testing came with the pre-IWL drivers. i.e. Intel daemon and ifw3945abg drivers. I upgraded to ‘unstable’ tree two weeks back (mid of March 2008) and got the iwlwifi drivers and removed the binary-only daemon.
The binary daemon had a lot of issues. During long data transfers, wireless interfaces used to disappear after transferring around 8-10 MB of data. This used to hang the entire system.
Sound
Didn’t work with the 2.4.22 kernel which came with testing. I compiled 2.6.24.4 and upgraded alsa packages and sound worked like a charm. While compiling the kernel, make sure to enable “Intel HD Audio”. You need ALSA version 1.0.15 or above.
On my system:
# cat /proc/asound/version
Linux shannon 2.6.24.4 #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Mar 26 22:55:37 IST 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Webcam
# apt-get install module-assistant linux-uvc-source luvcview
# m-a a-i linux-uvc
# modprobe uvcvideo
This should create a device /dev/video0. Try opening luvcview and see if you can see yourself on the screen.
Or do:
$ mplayer -fps 30 tv://
CPU Frequency Scaling
To save power, modern Mobile CPUs do frequency scaling (Power = c * f * V^2, where c is a constant, V is the voltage and f is the frequency). It worked out of the box with the stock Debian kernel (2.6.22-3 at this point). The GNOME CPU Scaling Monitor applet shows the current frequency. In my system, it shows 800MHz. When I do anything more intensive, like compiling a program, it switches to 2.0 GHz.
BIOS Upgrade
Suspend to Ram and Suspend to disk
Suspend to ram works fine. Do:
# apt-get install uswsusp hibernate gnome-power-manager
To do a suspend to ram, do
# s2ram -f -p -m
The only quirk is that the Harddisk Power Management settings get reset, so I can hear the harddisk clicks, which is a sign of Load/Park cycles happening on your disk head.
This webpage had been instrumental in getting suspend-to-ram to work. Now I need to tackle suspend to disk.
